Build a website with a .al domain
From idea to live site in seven steps: choose the name, register the domain, get hosting, install WordPress, connect DNS, enable SSL and create your email.
Step 1: choose the name
The name is the one thing you cannot easily change later, so it is worth spending some time on it. A good name is short, easy to pronounce and does not need spelling out over the phone. Avoid hyphens and numbers, and keep in mind that the .al registry does not accept the letters ë and ç.
Before deciding, check two things: that the name is not a trademark registered with DPPI, and that it is not on AKEP's lists of prohibited or reserved names. More tips in how to choose a domain name.
Step 2: register the .al domain
Search the name in the search box and pick the extension. A .al domain costs €8.99 per year, while .com.al, .net.al and .org.al cost €9.99 per year, excluding VAT. You can register for 1 to 10 years.
During checkout, fill in the registrant details and upload the document: an identification document for individuals or a QKB extract for companies. The application is verified by AKEP and, with complete documentation, usually approved within 1–3 business days. You can prepare the next steps in the meantime. Details are in register a .al domain.
Step 3: get hosting
The domain is the address; hosting is where the site's files live. For a brochure site, blog or portfolio, shared hosting is usually enough. If you know you will use WordPress, WordPress hosting saves you a few steps. Compare the options in hosting for a .al domain.
Step 4: install WordPress
WordPress is one of the most widely used ways to build a site without writing code. After installing it from the hosting panel:
- pick a simple, fast theme that looks good on mobile;
- set the site language in the settings so dates and messages appear in the right language;
- create the core pages: Home, About, Services and Contact;
- install only the plugins you need and keep them updated.
If you prefer another platform, the domain and DNS steps stay the same.
Step 5: connect the domain to hosting
Once the domain is approved, you need to tell the internet where the site lives. There are two routes:
- Change the nameservers to your hosting provider's, if you want it to manage the whole DNS zone.
- Keep the managed DNS at no extra cost and add the A or CNAME records your host gives you. The panel also supports AAAA, MX, TXT, SRV and CAA records.
Changes may take a while to propagate across the network. Check the status with the DNS Checker. The full explanation is in DNS and nameservers.
Step 6: enable SSL
An SSL certificate makes the site load over HTTPS so browsers do not mark it as not secure. Enable it as soon as the domain points to your hosting, because the certificate is issued for a domain that resolves to the server. Check whether your plan includes one, or add one of our SSL certificates. Then make sure every HTTP address redirects to HTTPS.
Step 7: create email on your domain
The last step is an address like [email protected]. You can set it up with Google Workspace, OX App Suite or another service by adding the MX and TXT records your provider gives you. See professional email with a .al domain.
Once the site is live, do not leave it empty: under the regulation, a .al domain that is not put into use for one year from registration or renewal may be released.
