EPP code

The EPP code for your .al domain

The EPP code, also called the AUTH code or transfer key, is what lets you move your domain to another registrar. Here is how it works.

What the EPP code is

The EPP code is an authorisation code tied to one specific domain. Depending on the registrar you may see it under different names: EPP code, AUTH code, authorisation code or transfer key. They all mean the same thing.

Its role is simple: it proves that whoever requests the transfer of the domain has the holder's authorisation. Without this code, a .al domain cannot move to another registrar. In practice, the EPP code is the key to your domain.

When you need the EPP code

The EPP code is used to transfer a .al domain from one registrar to another. You need it in two situations:

  • You want to bring the domain to UpFlare. Request the code from your current registrar, which is obliged to provide it. Then enter it when you place the transfer order at UpFlare.
  • You want to move the domain away from UpFlare. Request the code from us and give it to the new registrar.

The EPP code is not needed to change DNS, renew the domain or update contact details. To change the legal holder, see the guide to changing the domain owner.

How to request the EPP code at UpFlare

At UpFlare, the EPP code for .al domains is requested through support, so that the code is given only to an authorised person. The steps:

  1. Log in to the client area and open the domain.
  2. Click the Request EPP code button. It automatically opens a support ticket for that domain.
  3. Alternatively, you can open a ticket directly and include the domain name.
  4. The team verifies the request and sends you the code through the ticket.

Make sure the registrant email is correct and reachable, because transfer confirmations are sent there.

The 24-hour window

Under the regulation, the authorisation code for .al domains must be used within 24 hours of issue. That means you should request it only when you are ready to start the transfer:

  • Have your account at the new registrar and the transfer order ready before requesting the code.
  • If the code expires unused, simply request it again.
  • If the domain is close to expiry, renew it before transferring to be safe. See also .al domain expiry.

Keep the code private

Anyone who has the EPP code can try to start a transfer of your domain. Treat it like a password:

  • Do not publish it or send it to people you do not know.
  • Give it only to the new registrar or to the person carrying out the transfer on your behalf.
  • If you suspect the code has fallen into the wrong hands, contact support immediately.
  • Do not trust messages asking for the code in the name of AKEP or any registrar when you have not requested a transfer.

Most common mistakes

  • The code has expired: request it again; the window is 24 hours.
  • The domain is locked: remove the registrar lock at your current registrar.
  • Outdated email: update the contact before you start.
  • Domain close to expiry: renew it before the transfer.
