The first question is not which domain is “better”, but where your customers are. A restaurant in Durrës, a notary office in Tirana or an online shop that only ships within Albania speak to a local audience. For them, .al is the most natural address.
If your product sells mainly abroad, for example a software studio with clients in Europe or a platform that works in several languages, .com signals that you are not tied to a single market. In that case .com can be the main domain and .al an extra address for local customers.
For the Albanian diaspora, .al remains a clear signal that the website speaks Albanian and has a connection to the country.
A .al domain is the clearest signal that a website targets the Albanian market. Customers understand right away that they are dealing with a local business. On top of that, every .al application is verified by AKEP and requires identification: an identity document for individuals and a QKB extract for companies. No domain name is registered with false data. This verification makes .al an address linked to a real registrant.
On the other hand, .com is the best-known extension in the world. For an international audience, it looks ordinary and trustworthy precisely because it is not tied to any country.
Search engines use the country extension as one of the geographic signals. For this reason, a .al website has a natural advantage for searches made from Albania. A .com website can also rank well in Albania, but it has to rely more on other signals, such as the language of the content and the business address.
The extension is only one signal. Good content, page speed and links from other websites remain the factors that make the biggest difference, whichever domain you choose.
A .al domain costs €8.99 per year, while .com.al, .net.al and .org.al cost €9.99 per year. Renewal is at the same price and prices exclude VAT. You can find the current .com price in the price list at upflare.com.
The .al domain has a few specific rules you should know: the application is approved by AKEP, usually within 1–3 business days; reserved names, prohibited names and trademarks registered with DPPI cannot be registered by others; and a .al domain that is not put into use for 1 year from the registration or renewal date may become free. Read the AKEP rules and the required documents.
Many businesses do not pick just one. They register both, set one as the main domain and redirect the other to it. This way:
The practical rule: choose as your main domain the one that matches your main audience, .al for Albania and .com for the international market. If the brand has commercial value, add .com.al as protection too. To set up the redirect, read .al domain forwarding.
